Following the news from Germany’s federal information security agency (BSI) that
Microsoft tracks users of Windows 10 over 500 different ways, i received dozens of emails
asking if i could implement a way for HostsCK to keep an updated list of Microsoft blocks
i.e. addresses that connect to Microsoft servers with private data from your PC.
HostsCK version 2.2.2 (update 32) now gives an option to download extra Microsoft blocks which
will be saved to the Hosts file when you open and save a new file. Just like any saved sites, lists or
Microsoft blocks that are provided as part of the HostsCK installation, these extra sites are
appended to the end of the Hosts after the comment “# Start Of Extra Microsoft Blocks #”.
The list comes from W4RH4WK’s list on GitHub:
Please note: Some of these extra blocked addresses may interfere with the normal use of
Windows or Windows update.
How to include the extra list
Go to HostsCK’s settings > Backup & Saving. There you will see a checkbox to include
the extra Microsoft list. When that is checked you will see a “Update extra Microsoft blocks”
menu item in in the “About” menu on HostsCK.
When you first check for an update the list will be downloaded. You will need to open a
Hosts file and save it so that the list is added.
I have made W4RH4WK’s list compatible with HostsCK and removed any entries that are already in the
Microsoft blocks list provided as part of the HostsCK installation.
